Create Infrastructure

create-infrastructure1Infrastructure is the social and structural systems that facilitate safe living and continuous progress of communities. It comes through access to safe housing, food, water, agriculture, public health, commercial space, industrial growth, power supplies, energy resources, transportation, financial services and so forth.

In the process of economic development, over millions and billions of dollars are spent worldwide to creating and building infrastructure for communities. Most of these cases, the local communities find no say or no stake in the infrastructure that is created for them with a purpose of human habitation, and revenue generation.

create-infrastructure2The combine of builders and planners blissfully ignore the criticism, if the infrastructure is raised without taking sufficient care and measures of its master design, overall safety, renew ability and sustainability. Safe and sustainable buildings must have the spatial design, and building components, that includes material, pre and post construction management strategies which ensure safety and sustainability. It should also engage local people and involve surrounding communities, create ownership, and focus more on its long term infrastructure maintenance.

Further, the safe and sustainable building infrastructure is such, which eliminate associated risks and the harmful impacts on the user, local communities and environment. It appropriately uses land, ground water, Eco-friendly material, minimizes uses of machines, reduces air, water and sound pollutions, and increase legibility of the structure.

In general, safe and sustainable building infrastructure should benefit local communities by helping them to improve their standard of living, ensuring healthy and pollution free environment and facilitating a good living instead of disturbing the local habitation.

The social infrastructure conditions, in which people live and work, are among the major factors influencing public health. The community and social environment (that includes social behavior, social status, social networks, and cultural dynamics and government policies) have direct or indirect affect on the individual health and social safety. The physical environment (including  the living and working environment), contain major hazards and life threats to health mostly due to frequent climate change, physical location, natural disasters, infrastructure and  housing conditions, living in overcrowded and over polluted cities, exposed to critical biological and chemical agents.

Therefore, it’s uniformly important to create social infrastructure that facilitates individual security, community safety, reduce vulnerability and ensure safe habitation. The habitation planning should create provision to energy, safe water, safe sanitation, improved communication, public and private transportation, and help community in strengthening resilience.

A good quality infrastructure planning should have periodic hazards assessment, ensure hazard donation, implement safe building standards, provide adequate health facilities, create safe schools and build “easy to exit” emergency evacuation routes, these facilities make an individual or a community to remain safer at the event of a major crisis. For the sake of community safety and infrastructure sustainability, the habitat policies and plans should try to connect and mainstream with “customized financial packages”, these accommodate the specific needs, basic living and associated livelihood supports and services for the different segments of communities.

Key Message: Community involvement in developing building infrastructure, policy and planning ensures long term security, wherein social infrastructure is critical for overall safety and sustainability.
